j. lewis- A Poem

j.lewis is an internationally published poet, musician, and nurse practitioner. When he is not otherwise occupied, he is often on a kayak, exploring and photographing the waterways near his home in California.

river rising

rain is falling
white noise in a black night
covering the ugly sounds
of city after dark

outside my window
is a random rhythm
drops without number
i cannot dance their song
only follow the cadence
with wandering thoughts
ideas and memories
that hold you to view
blurred through moistured window
or clear in the air
of afternoon
after rain

sorrows surface
i never forget
i once loved you
only as much as you gave in
gauging affection
in hundredths of inches
barometer always falling
falling

all things pass
early or late
night
clouds
and rain
slip away
and in the newness
of day not fully born
remembered moments of your constancy
not unlike uncounted raindrops
join one to one
collect and wash over me
like a river rising
